How To Get Motivated? 7 Things That Steal Your Motivation

Let me ask you a question and I want you to answer it by leaving a comment below this blog post. What does a motivated person look like to you and how do you get motivated? To have individual motivation is something that has to be worked on daily. For most people, obstacles arise when they set out on this journey towards achieving their goals.

There are 7 main obstacles that stop most people from moving forward. Those obstacles are…

  1. Lack of motivation
  2. Laziness
  3. Fear
  4. Negativity
  5. Doubt
  6. Resistance
  7. Lack of resources

Have you come across any of these obstacles lately?

I sure have.

Now these obstacles can definitely make your journey towards achieving your goals a little bit harder, but did you know that you can push past these obstacles and get back on track? Let’s quickly talk about how you can overcome these 7 obstacles.

Obstacle #1: Lack of Motivation

All of us lose motivation from time to time and the best way to combat this is by bombarding yourself…

Literally and figuratively, bombarding yourself with content as well as surround yourself with people who motivate you.

There is A TON of motivational content on the internet these days.

From motivational quotes to motivational videos, all you have to do is type the word ‘motivation’ into Google and hundreds upon thousands of results pop up. Everyone is looking for a way to get motivated and stay positive.

For you, how do you motivate yourself to keep going?

Do you like positive affirmation videos to help you change the way you think? Or maybe you like motivational videos that give you that boost of confidence you need to keep going.

Or do you enjoy going on social media and following different motivational Instagram accounts, Facebook pages or even joining different Facebook groups, to be connected with like minded individuals?

Whatever it is that helps you to get your fire back, consume as much of it as you can.

Obstacle #2: Laziness

All I can say is this…

If you want it, you will go after it. If you don’t want it, you won’t. Simple as that.

Only you can remove laziness from your life.

Obstacle #3: Fear

There are a few people in this world who are truly fearless and trust me I am not one of them. Sadly, I have allowed fear to stop me many times from moving forward in life. For many people, once fear kicks in, they usually give up on that dream they once had.

In order to see the bigger picture, you have to push past fear some way, some how. Now everyone handles fear in their own way. For me, once fear begins to creep in, I like to remove myself from what I am doing and take a break.

I would either watch some YouTube, play videogames, study a language, or take a nap.

Take a nap.

This allows my mind to relax for a minute. This also stops the negative thoughts right in their tracks and not allow them to go crazy in my mind. By doing something like this, you become the master of your thoughts instead of them becoming a master of you.

After I give myself a minute to relax, I like to then quickly journal about the fearful thought that just came to my mind or about the doubt I was beginning to feel.

I ask myself probing questions like…

By asking myself questions like these, I am able to stop the negative thoughts and feelings at the root and not allow them to grow and take over.

I say all of this to say, that in order to be a motivated individual, you have to tackle the things in your mind that can hinder you from being one. That means you have to tackle the fears and doubts that you have even if it is just a little at a time. The goal is for you to have a mind filled with positive thoughts and to be able to let go of anything that is not serving you.

Obstacle #4: Negativity

Sadly negative people and situations can pop up in your life without warning and it can be a real pain. The best way to handle negative people is to remove them, if you can, from your life. If you are unable to do that, try to limit the amount of time you interact with them.

To combat negative situations and people, bombard yourself, yet again, with as much positivity as possible.

What I like to do, when I am hit with a negative situation and my positivity levels are low, is watch different videos that instantly put a smile on my face. Videos of animals doing something cute or silly does the trick for me.

From puppies to watching a duck and a cat become friends, it just warms my heart and any negativity that was in my mind or around me is quickly removed.

I say do the same.

Try to find something that can instantly change your mood when negativity tries to creep in. Create a folder of those go to videos, blog posts, quotes, pretty much any piece of content that can help you stay positive when you are surrounded by negativity.

Obstacle #5: Doubt

Sadly, we all have our moments of doubt and the best way to combat this is by building up your confidence. There are many ways of doing this. You can build your confidence up by listening to some confidence boosting affirmations to help you change the way you think about yourself.

Did you know that showing yourself some self love can help boost your confidence as well?

Having ‘me time’ is not being selfish. It is a necessity in order for you to be your best. You can also focus on turning your negative thoughts into positive ones.

Lastly, try to remember why you started to go after this dream in the first place. Remembering your ‘why’ helps to bring that fire back when it starts to get tough.

Obstacle #6: Resistance

Have you been running into a lot of resistance lately? Things not going the way you planned or something keeps coming up stopping you in your tracks? Whatever the hinderance is, the best way to move past resistance is by not allowing it to stop you.

Yes…I know.

Way easier said than done, but it is true. You have to be stronger than the resistance that shows up. The saying, ‘where there’s a will there’s a way‘, wasn’t created for nothing.

If you are determined to do something, you will find a way to accomplish it no matter the obstacle. If you do not, then that dream or goal you had isn’t actually something that you want to go after.

For example, like weight lifting…

If you want to build muscle, you have to lift heavy to break the muscle down so that it can rebuild. The moment it gets hard, you decide to quit, then your body will never look the way you want it to.

This same idea goes for any dream you have. You have to keep going even when it gets tough. One way that I have found that helps me push past resistance is by first taking a break.

As you can see, taking breaks is one of my go-to methods of overcoming most of these obstacles since most of the time that is really what I need in that moment. By taking a minute to myself, it allows my brain time to rest and recharge.

Me time‘ remember?

After that I like to find some piece of content that inspires me to keep going. Again, going on different Instagram accounts or watching different YouTube videos is one of the best ways to get connected with people who can help inspire you to push ahead.

Obstacle #7: Lack of Resources

When it comes to going after any dream you have, there will always be some sort of a learning curve. It could be big or small and not having the resources to move forward can really stop you in your tracks.

The best way to combat this, if you are unable to gain access to the resources you need, is to Google how you can use what you currently have to get to where you need to be.

You can also ask friends, family, join a forum, find people on LinkedIn or other social media sites to see if they can help lead you in the right direction. Don’t let the lack of resources hold you back.

When there is a will there is a way…remember?

This is the perfect time for you to think outside the box and come up with some amazing ideas as to how you can overcome this obstacle.

For me, my go to ways to push past the lack of resources is to Google how I can use what I have to get to that next step, or Google places where I can learn the skill or gain the knowledge I need to move forward.

I also like to see which individuals on social media are doing exactly what I am doing and learn from them. You may have to do the same thing.

Where Do You Stand?

Achieving your goals is not going to be a walk in the park unfortunately. You will experience some ups and downs on this road to success. The question is, are you going to throw in the towel when it starts to get tough?

Are you going to find a way to push past any obstacle that comes your way?

Just so you know…If you do decide to give up, the only person you are hurting is yourself. So what will you do when it starts to get tough out there?

For me, my biggest dream is to have a successful online business. I started this journey back in 2016 and I am still on this road right now. It did not start out with rainbows and butterflies, but instead it started out with almost $20k in debt, hours upon hours of late night work, and many obstacles, hurdles, and learning curves I needed to overcome.

Yet, through it all, I did not give up. Am I where I want to be…

Not yet but I know that the only way for me to get there is by continuing to move forward. That means not letting fear, anxiety, worry, other people, setbacks, or anything else for that matter hold me back or stop me in my tracks. I have to take a step forward no matter what.

The same goes for you!

Rest and Recovery is Key

Now I am not saying that my motivation levels were always high and I always kept pushing forward. Sadly, there were many days where I felt burnt out and I wanted to give up right then and there. I had to take many breaks along the way to remind myself to live my life.

That I couldn’t be consumed by this pursuit to be successful. Spending time with friends and family helped me a lot to recharge so that I could get back out there. I say all of this to say, that you cannot stop enjoying life.

You need mental breaks and times of refreshment in order to keep going. I recommend getting out into nature. Hanging out with friends. Watch or look at something that is motivational or inspirational.

Spending time with family. Go to the spa. Get active in some way. Go on a trip. Play videogames. Do whatever you need to, in order to recharge so that you can hit the ground running the next time you work towards your goals.
